What are Organic Waste Converters

Organic waste converters are machines that are used to convert organic waste such as vegetable waste, meat waste, bakery waste, leaves, fruits and fruit skins, and flowers into valuable compost that can be used for organic farming activities. Converters are commonly referred to as composters. Some of the converters can be used for treatment and recycling of both solid and liquid organic waste.

Converters are actually self-contained systems designed to perform a variety of functions such as waste segregation, shredding or crushing, filtering, dewatering, mixing, and curing. Due to the wide variety of functions available on converters, the technology has found application in diverse sectors of work that generate organic waste.

Residential Estates, Restaurants, Food Canteens, Shopping Malls, Educational Institutes, Municipal Corporations, Vegetable Markets, Fish Markets, Military Bases, Naval Bases, and Temples are among the beneficiaries of the organic waste converter technology.

Models of organic waste converters

Converters vary due variation in the technology used by different innovators. There are two models of organic waste converters available with Earth Care Equipments Pvt. Ltd.

Kwik composter 50 (KC50)-:

Organic Waste Converter
KWIK COMPOSTER (KC) – Organic Waste Composter (without heaters)

This is a fully automatic, electronically controlled Bio-Mechanical composter and a continuous organic waste converter. It is credited with a proven and sustainable micro-organism based technology. This particular machine converts organic waste into compost enriched with nitrogen. It reduces the volume of the waste by up to 80%.

This converter model is unique because of the following features and specifications-:

Features-:

It is fully automatic and easy to operate

It is silent and odorless

It is proven and sustainable

100% segregation may not be required

Compost produced is rich in nitrogen

Low operating and maintenance costs

Specifications -:

  • It requires 3ph power supply
  • Its maximum connected load is 15 HP
  • Space requirement for the machine is: height 1290mm x width 1190mm x length 2900mm.

  • Activated carbons need to be replaced after every 5 years
  • The motors in the gear box are easily maintainable by any machinist
  • A detailed preventive maintenance guide is provided with the machine
  • If need be, the supplier undertakes to operate the machine for at least 1 month on mutually agreed terms and conditions.

The Kwik composter is associated with the following operating costs:

  • Electricity consumption is approximately Rs. 344 per month
  • Composting culture costs approximately Rs. 195 per month
  • Manpower input is approximately 2 hours per day (this may be neglected)
  • Depending on wetness of the organic waste, saw dust may be required form a couple of months, or the requirement may be consistent until the biological process is set up.

The Kwik composter can only process the following types of organic waste.

  • Household kitchen food waste
  • Vegetables
  • Vegetable waste
  • Fruits and fruit skins
  • Cooked or uncooked meat
  • Bones/egg shells
  • Bread/bakery items
  • All cooked food waste
  • Street-sweeping leaves
  • Leaves and tree branches (bigger branches should be broken into small pieces)
  • Flowers
  • Temple waste

Compared to other converters, the Kwik composter is superior because of the following advantages-:

  • Its composting process is continuous
  • Its composting capacity is 50 kgs per day.
  • It is closed from all sides and it is free from pathogens
  • It has an in-built curing system.
  • Its manpower requirement is negligible and it can be operated by unskilled personnel.
  • Its operating cost is about 50% of other types of converters.
  • Once the waste is deposited in it, there is no need for further handling.
  • Its enclosure helps to preserve heat
  • There is an odor filter available as additional accessory.
  • The composting process is electronically monitored and controlled.
  • Its space requirement is low because all processes happen in the same unit.
  • The temperature inside the unit is high, and this helps to kill pathogens.
  • It creates ambience because the food waste deposited is processed to compost with a pleasant smell.

There are several other Kwik composter models with larger composting capacity than the KC50. You will find KC100, KC150, KC200, KC250, KC300, KC400, KC600, and KC1000.

Kwik composter accelerator 50 (KCA 50)-:

Just like the Kwik composter, this model is another fully automatic Bio-Mechanical converter. It is a compact machine with heaters. It uses aerobic composting to convert organic waste into biomass and in the process reduces its volume by up to 80% of the original. It uses a batch composting system and its processing capacity is 50 kgs per day.

This particular converter is most suitable for sectors in which space and composting time is a major limitation. Organic waste conversion happens much faster than in similar composting machines and its operating costs are lower compared to other heater based systems.

The following features and specifications distinguish this particular converter from others-:

Features-:

It is compact and affordable

It is fully automatic and easy to operate

It is silent and odorless

It is proven and sustainable

Its maintenance is low

Specifications-:

  • It requires electricity supply of 3ph.
  • Its connected load is 5 KW
  • Space requirement for the machine is: height 1055mm x width 800mm x length 1525mm.
  • Installation recommendations include: a platform for loading through inlet and space of 3 feet from the wall to be spared on all sides of the machine. However, these requirements are not mandatory.

The Kwik composter accelerator is supplied with the following components-:

  • A suitable exhaust blower with an activated carbon filter is in-built in the converter.
  • A panel board.
  • An operations manual.

The Kwik composter accelerator is associated with the following operating costs-:

  • Monthly electricity consumption depends on moisture content of the waste.
  • There is a one time cost included in  the monthly composting culture quote
  • Manpower input is usually neglected because manual operations only involve loading the organic waste and replacing the compost barrel.

The Kwik composter accelerator can only process the following types of organic waste-:

  • Household kitchen food waste
  • Vegetables
  • Vegetable waste
  • Fruits and fruit skins
  • Cooked or uncooked meat
  • Bones/egg shells
  • Bread/bakery items
  • All cooked food waste
